When You Can't Find Rest
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28
You've earned it, haven't you? The right to rest. You've worked hard, stayed up late, pushed through exhaustion, kept everyone else going. Surely, now you can stop.
But here's the truth we forget: rest isn't something we earn. It's something we receive.
Jesus didn't say, "Come to me when you've done enough." He said, "Come to me, all you who are weary." Not the strong. Not the impressive. Not the ones who have it all together. The tired ones. The ones carrying too much.
Rest is an invitation, not a reward. It's sacred space God creates for us, not because we've checked every box, but because He loves us. When we collapse into His presence—even if it's messy, even if we're still worried about tomorrow—we're not being weak. We're being human.
Our culture tells us rest is lazy. That we have to hustle, prove, produce. But God whispers something different: "Be still. You are loved. You are held. You don't have to carry this alone."
Maybe today, rest looks like five quiet minutes with your Bible. Maybe it's saying no to one thing so you can breathe. Maybe it's admitting you're tired and asking for help. Whatever it is, know this: you don't have to earn the right to stop. You already have permission.
To try this week
Today, identify one thing you can release. One task, one worry, one expectation you've been carrying that God never asked you to hold. Write it down, pray over it, and let it go. Rest is not a luxury—it's a gift God offers freely.
A closing prayer
Lord, I'm tired. I've been running on empty, trying to prove I'm enough. Teach me to rest in Your love, not my performance. Help me receive Your peace today. Amen.
