Stepping Out in Faith

Come, he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.

Matthew 14:29

Peter gets a lot of criticism for sinking. But let's not miss the miracle: he got out of the boat. He was the only one who stepped into the storm, the only one who walked on water—even if just for a moment.

Stepping out in faith is terrifying. Whether it's a new job, a difficult conversation, a ministry calling, or simply trusting God with something you've been holding too tightly—it feels risky. What if you fail? What if it's a mistake? What if you sink?

But faith isn't about having all the answers. It's about hearing Jesus say "Come" and choosing to move toward Him, even when it doesn't make sense. Even when you're scared. Even when the storm is raging and you can't see how it's going to work out.

Yes, Peter started to sink. But Jesus didn't let him drown. The moment Peter cried out, Jesus reached out His hand. That's what God does—He meets us in our fear, in our doubt, in our imperfect attempts at faith. He doesn't expect perfection. He just wants us to take the step.

What is God calling you to step into today? It might be big or small, but it requires trust. And here's the truth: even if you stumble, Jesus will catch you. You don't have to have it all figured out. You just have to get out of the boat.

To try this week

Identify one area where God is calling you to step out in faith. Write it down. Then take one small, brave step toward it this week. Trust that even if you falter, Jesus is right there, ready to steady you.

A closing prayer

Lord, I'm scared to take this step. But I hear You calling me forward, and I choose to trust You. Give me courage to get out of the boat and walk toward You, even when I'm afraid. Catch me when I falter. Amen.
